Our Planet is Wounded

Environmental concerns are widely visible in the wake of a major disaster, and sustainability, environmental stewardship, and climate change are the specific focal points.  Customers are backing sustainable products and, in some cases, are willing to pay more for them.

Investor focus shifts to socially responsible companies and industries are subject to more local and global regulations. Because concepts like climate change and sustainability aren’t easily defined, investors adopted the analytical framework known as Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG).

Understanding the "E" in ESG

ESG is a framework for risk evaluation based on environmental, social, and governance practices. ESG metrics are quantitative, long-term, and can be subject to public disclosure. ESG strategies are complex and require measurable goals, specialized data collection and analysis, and strategic planning. Companies with an ambitious sustainability strategy benefit from investor interest, and it helps businesses conduct ESG evaluations and shore up gaps proactively. The “E” in ESG is vital to the public and investors, so it only makes sense that it comes first in the acronym. Environmentally responsible and sustainable practices can increase the bottom line and create an attractive working environment.

Understanding & Adopting ESG

ESG has emerged as the standard framework in evaluating the overall health of a business operating model and its long-term resiliency. Today, organizations align their operating business model with EHS initiatives anchored with the United Nations’ sustainable development goals. Organizations are committed to taking positive steps through economically viable investments, technically appropriate operations, environmentally sound practices, and socially responsible actions.

Organizations’ strategic leaders are searching and demanding thoughtful, progressive policies and programs in all three ESG areas (Environment, Social, & Governance). At 5Capitals, our subject matter experts have the sustainable strategic thinking and technical expertise to provide unbiased, client-centric advisory to help them understand and direct ongoing ESG programs and on how to proactively manage their ESG risks and opportunities.

The Evolution of ESG from CSR

The genesis of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) standards is the same – adopting practices and policies by corporations intended to influence the world positively. Companies have historically looked at options to operate in ways that enhance society and the environment instead of contributing negatively to them.

However, the focus has shifted from a purely outward-looking analysis to a more dynamic approach focusing on an organization’s internal and external factors through the last few years.

Generally, people get confused over the differences among concepts of ESG and CSR and often use them interchangeably. While both these concepts are related, each has its own definitive goals and characteristics.

CSR & ESG

Corporate culture has never been more transparent or essential than it is today. Sustainability leaders, investors, and other stakeholders are choosing companies that align with their values. Millennials, in particular, have been cited as key to this shift through their spending power and ability to publicize support or dissatisfaction widely.  Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) policies guide business practices and inform the public about a Company’s values, goals, and risks.

Caring for the environment is a shared responsbility

Infrastructure developers and operators must embed ESG criteria in their projects to achieve a cleaner, safer, & sustainable world.
